Man spends 32,000 hours creating a model of an oil rig using four million matchsticks

David Reynolds 51, has spent 32,000 hours creating what is now officially the world’s biggest matchstick model. Apart from costing him £5,000 in wood and glue, it has left things a bit strained in the Reynolds household. The model weighs a tonne, is 3.6m tall and 6.4m long and at one stage had to be split into 14 sections. Each matchstick was individually polished and then glued in place to create the 21ft long, 12ft high masterpiece.

A man who spent 15 years building a gigantic oil rig out of a whopping 4 million matches and hopes to get his creation into the record books. The current record for the most matches used to make a model stands at three-and-a-half million matches. The model took up two bedrooms, the loft, two sheds and half his garage so he’s now relocated it to a local museum.

There’s the main body of the rig itself, supported by three enormous circular buttresses, littered with cranes, lifeboats and a helipad marked with an ‘H’. Then there’s what’s called the platform – almost as big as the rig itself and designed to bob about to one side on an enormous floating pontoon.

‘It just started as a bit of a hobby but I guess it got out of hand,’ said retired oil rig engineer Mr Reynolds. ‘It’s good fun and keeps the grey matter working.

Unusual Underground Map

Animals on the Underground is a collection of over 20 animal characters made using only lines, stations and interchange symbols on the London Underground map, created by illustrator Paul Middlewick in 1987. In 2003, the concept was used in a poster campaign by advertising agency McCann-Erickson to promote the London Zoo. They have also appeared on London Television and in press articles around the world including The Daily Mail and The Guardian.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) ran a fund raising poster campaign on the London Underground in April 2008. The posters used the Seal, Elephant and Whale images to raise awareness of seal hunting in Canada, the ivory trade and whale hunting respectively.

Surfing is always a fun thing to do whether you are a beginner who keeps falling off the board or a professional. But, what you see in the pictures is extreme and extraordinary. While surfing in warm waters is one thing, surfing in icy cold Arctic waters is a whole different experience. The diving suit has to be always worn so you don’t die of the cold and the waves that come up can be pretty high so you must be a good surfer to be able to do this.

Although some of the regions look quite calm others looks downright rough. You can’t deny that it looks appealing and the lack of crowd makes it all the more special. The breathtaking beauty of the ice everywhere adds to the feeling of pleasant isolation. If you look hard, you will see that a few tiny houses are the only sign of inhabitation you see in all the pictures.

It all started when Andre Grenard returned from Paris all dressed up and had a huge fan following. The organization of SAP has members that are artists and they never fail to stand out in a crowd. There is a big man made jungle that is under construction for our future children. The modern world is going to be less of a natural jungle and more of a concrete jungle in the. Even the monkeys are making peace with this and now they reside in the construction of these huge buildings. More and more children are being brought up with no direct contact with nature. The Island Safari Centre on Koh Samui is teaching six-year old Malie, and nine-year old Toktak to use their trunks to perform basketball skills, in an effort to improve their health and vitality.

Organisers at the Island Safari centre, which cares for the animals, say the huge beasts have to undergo rigorous training to learn the basics of the popular game.

Training starts by teaching elephants the basics in ball control, before they move on to hold it in their trunk and throw it at the hoop.

To some this may seem cruel but it’s better than these beasts being walked along the night streets of Bangkok for tourists to feed bananas.

Swimming is biologically propelled motion through a liquid medium. Swimming has evolved a number of times in a range of organisms ranging from arthropods to fish to molluscs. But, sometimes nature can be strange and funny, and to give swiming power to animals that don’t bellong to water! Bellow you can see funny examples of that animals swiming.

Swimming pig

On the beaches of Big Major Spot Island, the Bahamas, a family of brown and pink boars and piglets live freely on the sandy white beaches and swim in the tropical surf. This photograph was taken near a small key famous for the “swimming pigs.” A colony of pigs lives on the key, and they often swim near visiting boats.

Swimming elephant

Nazroo, a mahout (elephant driver), poses for a portrait while taking his elephant, Rajan, out for a swim in front of Radha Nagar Beach in Havelock, Andaman Islands. Rajan is one of the few elephants in Havelock that can swim, so when he is not dragging timber in the forest he is used as a tourist attraction. The relationship between the mahout and his elephant usually lasts for their entire lives, creating an extremely strong tie between the animal and the human being.

Swimming horses

Horses paddle with their legs, with most of the motion from the knee down, and they are quite buoyant. Most enjoy swimming! “Most horses see no reason to enter the ocean–there’s nothing to eat, they can’t drink the water, and they’d have a hard time escaping predators. However, in warm areas with small waves, some horses can actually enjoy ocean swimming.

Swimming tiger

This is a shot of Odin, a six year old tiger at Six Flags Marine World Africa. Unlike most cats, Odin loves to swim. This shot was taken by my ten year old daughter during her visit to the park. Odin is about ten feet long, was taught to swim by his trainer and by watching another tiger. He is gulping a chunk of raw meat tossed in the water in this photo, that is called motivation–tiger style.

Swimming deer

If you startled a deer, you might not expect it to jump into the nearest pond and submerge itself for minutes. But that is exactly what two species of mouse-deer in Asia do when confronted by predators, scientists have found. There are around 10 species of mouse-deer, which are also called ‘chevrotains’. All belong to the ancient ruminant family Tragulidae, which split some 50 million years ago from other ruminants, the group that went on to evolve into cattle, goats, sheep, deer and antelope.

Animals of all kinds were important to the Ancient Egyptians, and featured in the daily secular and religious lives of farmers, craftsmen, priests and rulers. Animals were reared mainly for food, whilst others were kept as pets. The bodies of sacred animals and some pets were often mummified and given elaborate burials.
A queen’s pet gazelle was readied for eternity with the same lavish care as a member of the royal family. In fine, blue-trimmed bandages and a custom-made wooden coffin, it accompanied its owner to the grave in about 945 B.C. Egyptian Museum, Cairo

Lovingly preserved, a hunting dog whose bandages fell off long ago likely belonged to a pharaoh. As a royal pet, it “would have been fed nibbly bits and spoiled rotten,” says Salima Ikram. When it died, it was interred in a specially prepared tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

Get a taste of miniature hell

These photos are part of the fascinating work of Mark Powell. Powell is an Australian artist who has been gaining popularity for his peculiar and nightmarish dioramas. His sculptures exaggerate and depicts dreary and guile subjects like cannibalism, parasitism and the evolvement of flesh when it is recycled to create morbid creatures. Even though his art comes across as very graphic, you have to commend him for doing a fabulous job in creating such morbidly beautiful art that can actually leave an impact on the viewer. Powell’s MySpace page’s about me section says “I am a mouth, an osophogus, a stomach, a small intestine, a large intestine and an anus.” His description of himself accurately reflects in his art. This work shown here is a depiction of hell in many ways. The charred skin, the prison-cell like rooms and the overall setting that the sculptures are put in send out a very devilish vibe.
