Least weasel lives wherever it can make a den to raise its young and store its food. The den is in a pile of rocks or loose earth. When lemmings are plentiful, so are weasels. Although they depend mostly on lemmings for food, they are not afraid to attack an Arctic hare. The adult male is about 30 cm. ( 12 in.) long including the tail. The female is smaller. This animal is slim so it can go into lemmings’ tunnels. The winter coats are white, and summer coats are brown. Ermine are fast, very brave and always hungry. When the ermine kills an animal it takes the food home. The weasel can be found almost anywhere in Canada (the coast, the mountains, the prairies and the far north). The weasel will move into a den of an animal that it has killed.

The Arctic hare is the largest hare in North America. Its fur is grayish brown in the summer. It has short ears with black tips. In the winter it has white fur, except for the black tips on its ears. Its white fur helps camouflage it from predators in the winter. In the northernmost parts of its range, it is always white. The Arctic hare has long claws, especially on its hind legs. It uses the claws to dig in packed snow. They can hop on their hind legs like kangaroos at speeds of up to 30 miles an hour. The Arctic hare also has incisors that are longer and straighter than most hares. It uses them to pull plants out from rocky crevices.

Polar bears have a thick oily fur coat and a layer of blubber under their skin. They spend most of their time on the pack ice or in the water, where they can hunt their favorite food – the ringed seal. The white fur helps the bear sneak up on seals that are laying on the ice. In the summer it is harder to catch seals, so before summer arrives, the bears eat as much as they can to fatten up, then live off the fat in their bodies. The females digs a den in the snow to hibernate during the worst part of the winter. The cubs are born in the den. The polar bear is a bear native largely within the Arctic circle encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is the world’s largest carnivore species found on land.

The Harp Seal is a marine mammal that spends most of its life in the sea, but also goes onto ice floes. It is a pinniped that lives along shorelines in the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, ranging from Russia to Greenland to Canada. The Harp Seal has short, thick white fur with black patches and a black face. The young are all white. These seals grow to be up to 5.5 feet (1.7 m) long and can weigh up to 285 pounds (130 kg); females are a bit smaller. The whiskers contribute to the seal’s sense of touch. The nostrils are closed in the resting state. Harp Seals are carnivores. They eat mostly fish and crustaceans. Seals don’t chew their food; they swallow it in large chunks. They can crush the shells of crustaceans with their flat back teeth. Harp seals are hunted by killer whales, polar bears, and people.

Deer Rangifer tarandus of Arctic and subarctic regions, common to North America and Eurasia. About 1.2 m/4 ft at the shoulder, it has a thick, brownish coat and broad hooves well adapted to travel over snow. It is the only deer in which both sexes have antlers; these can grow to 1.5 m/5 ft long, and are shed in winter. The Old World reindeer have been domesticated by the Lapps of Scandinavia for centuries. There are two types of North American caribou: the large woodland caribou of the more southerly regions, and the barren-ground caribou of the far north. Reindeer migrate south in winter, moving in large herds. They eat grass, small plants, and lichens.

Animals that live in the Arctic (either full time or seasonally) are adapted to extreme conditions. Many animals who overwinter in the Arctic (like the Arctic fox and the ermine) have a coat that thickens and changes color to white during the winter as camouflage in the snow

Arctic wolves are of the largest of the subspecies of the gray wolf. Their bodies are heavier set and are not as tall and lanky looking as some other subspecies. Arctic wolves have adapted very well to the icy environment where they live. They have white fur, which allows them to blend into their snowy surroundings. To help reduce heat loss, they have more-rounded ears, a shorter muzzle and shorter legs than other gray wolf subspecies. They also have hair between the pads of their feet and long, thick fur to keep them warm in temperatures that can drop to minus 70° Fahrenheit. Arctic wolves live primarily in the Arctic, the region located above 67° north latitude. The land is covered with snow and ice for most of the year.

The Arctic Fox lives in some of the most frigid extremes on the planet. The arctic fox is an incredibly hardy animal that can survive frigid Arctic temperatures as low as –58°F (-50°C) in the treeless lands where it makes its home. It has furry soles, short ears, and a short muzzle—all-important adaptations to the chilly clime. Arctic foxes live in burrows, and in a blizzard they may tunnel into the snow to create shelter. Arctic foxes have beautiful white (sometimes blue-gray) coats that act as very effective winter camouflage. The natural hues allow the animal to blend into the tundra’s ubiquitous snow and ice.

Snow monkeys live in large troops that can contain more than 500 animals. Average group size, however, falls between 40 and 200 individuals. Females usually run the show, and remain with the same group for life. Young males eventually outgrow their mothers’ troops and join up with different ones. Forest dwellers, snow monkeys spend time both on the ground and in the trees. Their home ranges are small, usually less than two square miles. When not foraging, feeding, or resting, they spend lots of time grooming one another. Snow monkeys are quick learners, and individuals have been known to invent new behavior patterns, like washing dirt off sweet potatoes.

At the extreme northern margins of the arctic tundra lives the Snowy Owl, the northernmost, heaviest, and most distinctively marked owl of North America. The Snowy Owl is a large, diurnal white Owl that has a rounded head, yellow eyes and black bill. The feet are heavily feathered. A distinctive white Owl, their overall plumage is variably barred or speckled with thin, black, horizontal bars or spots. Females and juveniles are more heavily marked than males – adult males may be almost pure white, although they have up to three tail bands. Adult females are distinctly barred throughout, and have from four to six tail bands. Immatures are very heavily barred throughout, and dark spotting may codominate or dominate the overall plumage. Intensity of dark spotting varies with the sex of the immatures, females being the darkest. Juveniles are uniformly brown with scattered white tips of down.

The snow leopard, known for its beautiful, thick fur, has a white, yellowish or soft gray coat with ringed spots of black on brown. The markings help camouflage it from prey. With their thick coats, heavy fur-lined tails and paws covered with fur, snow leopards are perfectly adapted to the cold and dry habitats in which they live. Snow leopards (Panthera uncia) live in the high mountains of Central Asia from Afghanistan to China, and from Russia to Bhutan, and it is thought that between 3,500 – 7,000 remain in the wild. More precise estimates are difficult with such a cryptic animal.

Ängsö island, Sweden

The island of Ängsö is small, only 168 hectares, of which 93 hectares are water, but so worth visiting. Ängsö is the smallest national park in Sweden and only a short distance away from the capital city of Stockholm. Apart from its significance as a cultural and historical monument to a bygone farming era, the park offers a very pleasing island landscape, with all the floral splendour for which the archipelago north of Stockholm is renowned. Ängsö is a very inviting and idyllic national park. A piece of old Sweden is preserved on the island, with pastures and summer meadows – countryside which developed over several centuries of human work. The coniferous forest covers a third of the area of the park. The Ängsö forest is now one of the best preserved virgin forests in the archipelago. Ospreys and sea eagles are sometimes seen on the island and the bird life of the forest groves is rich. A part of the island is a bird protection area, and admittance is prohibited in summer, but the main part of the island is open for the public. They are maybe not in package holidays, but you can find it anyway

Gaiola island, coast of Posillipo

The sea around cape Posillipo is nowadays a protected oasis, called ‘Natural Park of the Gaiola’, after the name of the islets in the middle of this area, on the south extremity of the promontory. It has a grim history and people like to tell you that it’s haunted. It is the site of an ancient navigators’ shrine to Venus as well as near the site of the few Roman ruins of “the sorcerer’s house” where the poet Virgil, also renowned as a magician, is said to have taught. Gaiola has two small neighbor islets. The modern house on it is abandoned. Over the centuries, Gaiola has developed a reputation of being haunted and there are many rumors about the misfortunes —including violent death— that befall those who inhabit it.

King Island, Tasmania

King Island is one of the islands that make up the state of Tasmania, Australia. The only way you can get to the Island is by plane, but don’t let this stop you from experiencing the the peace and quiet of Island life. At the western entrance to Bass Strait lies an idylic place known as King Island. An island rich in history, with shipwrecks, lighthouses and jagged reefs, bountiful with long stretching sandy beaches and lush green pasture. The island was named King’s Island after Governor King of New South Wales, whose territory at the time included what is now Tasmania. The Local Government Area of the island is King Island Council.

Bora Bora island, Papeete

Anyone who has ever dreamed of escaping to a deserted tropical island can live out that fantasy on Bora Bora. The island, located about 230 kilometres (140 miles) northwest of Papeete, is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef. In the center of the island are the remnants of an extinct volcano rising to two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, the highest point at 727 metres. The major settlement, Vaitape is on the western side of the island, opposite the main channel into the lagoon. The products of the island are mostly limited to what can be obtained from the sea and coconut trees, which were historically of economic importance for copra. Bora Bora island is possibly the single most famous island in all the world. The legends, mysteries, and romance associated with the words “Bora Bora” bring an almost mystical presence to the island. It’s true Bora Bora is indeed a wonderful place to go on a vacation… but this magical presence is not so unattainable. Bora Bora is truly an experience worth having. A wonderfully relaxing place to be as well as a great island for you to experience, your Bora Bora vacation will never be forgotten.
